Arguably the birthplace of America, Independence Hall has played a large part in the history of the America, and the world. It is the location of the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. The foundations for our democracy began here, in a modest building in Philadelphia. Originally intended to house the Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1753, it would only serve that purpose for 20 years before taking a much greater role in history. Situated nearby are other features of historic value, including the Liberty Bell, the first Presidential home, first and second National Banks and the home of Edgar Allen Poe.
